Randomness - The Cloud

Rachel's Randomness

on The Cloud

So...
if you stream something from "the Cloud"
... would it be considered "cyber rain," I wonder?

How does an insurance policy secure your financial future?

Let’s face it, there are more lawsuits today than ever. Most folks don’t draw the connection between an insurance policy and lawsuit protection. While a good policy won’t stop you from being sued it can protect you from financial disaster.

If you’re driving with a state minimum auto policy you’re flirting with financial disaster. Let’s say you’re held liable for $220,000 in an at-fault accident, your policy may only cover $60,000. That leaves $160,000 YOU are responsible for. You don’t have $160,000 lying around? Now you face the possibility of wage garnishments, court appearances, and bankruptcy.

Insurance is complicated, find an agent you can trust, and sleep soundly knowing all you’ve worked for is protected.

Running Updates

In the words of Niccum Tech President, Lonnie Niccum:

Windows users, it’s a good thing to know that Tuesday is the day when Windows admits its flaws and says, “Uh, well, here are a few more issues we did not think about before we sold it to you,” or even worse, “Sorry, but hackers have found a huge flaw and have taken full advantage of it.”

The good thing is, they DO admit to it and give the patches out for free.

Make sure your Windows phone, tablet, computer, or server is updated at least once a week. Windows makes it easy for you to do this by having you automatically do updates.

The simplest way to make sure you get all the necessary updates is to go to the “Updates” function on your device and configure it to update at least once per week or whenever it connects to the internet and you should be good.

There is a caveat to all this; updates sometimes cause more problems than they fix (eg, a new Internet Explorer update that nobody’s website is ready for). Simply do a backup of your system prior to any scheduled updates so if the update does cause an issue, you can simply revert to the previous version.

This, too, can be done automatically. By doing this, you can make sure you have all of the security threats that have been identified by Microsoft taken care of.

For help on configuring these settings, give us a call—we would be happy to help.

Let's Go Phishing?

Here's some helpful advice from Niccum Tech's President, Lonnie Niccum:

Let's Go Phishing?

So you’re a bit of a narcissist and you thought you would Google yourself... What you find is link that says they have some elicit pictures of you and they are posted on Facebook!

Immediately, you click on the link, which takes you to your Facebook login page.

There, you enter your account info -- and a cyber-criminal now has your password, along with total control of your account. It wasn’t Facebook or its login but it looked very similar.

Ways to keep this from happening:

  • Don’t “log in” on pop ups!
  • Make sure your antivirus protection has anti-phishing running on it
  • If you hover your mouse over a link on a webpage it will tell you the URL it is sending you to
  • When you click on a link double check the URL that you were sent to matches the one you clicked

While implementing some of these actions won’t guarantee a safe cyber-surfing experience, it sure will be harder for cyber-criminals to get your info.
